Auteur Watch - Neary Hay

It's hard sometimes to make a feature-length movie.  Hence you get things like Aria or Four Rooms or the Je t'aime series that everyone just... just loves to see.  In Neary's case, he's got two of them.  The first was 2005's Paris la métisse.  I guess that this is a trailer for it on YouTube.  The second is... oh, wait!  I guess that's it!  I'm DONE for the week, Halle Berry!  So, no reviews?  At least, none on a larger than local-to-France scale?  Man, that must've been a rough experience for him... Neary's a guy's name, right?  I mean, you do one group film, and BOOM, that's it, I'm done with this crazy business.  Sick of the politics, the divas waiting in their trailers, what have you...  This blog post is brought to you, by the way, by the film Paris la métisse.  Paris la métisse!  Not available through Netflix.  Or Amazon!  Or even Scarecrow!  Well, that's about as far as I'm going to go with this.  Let me know what I'm leaving out... I mean, Etsy's for homemade, non-DVD stuff, right?

The Pigeonhole Box Office

Fifty-two weeks in a year, but there's usually, typically not fifty-two different blockbusters at #1 for the year.  The only two examples that come immediately to mind... okay, three, are 1990's Home Alone, 1997's Titanic and 2009's Avatar.  No offense to Spielberg; I mean, 1993's first installment of Jurassic Park was a rather substantial hit... but for how many weeks?  I used to keep better track of such trivia on a weekly basis myself, but one computer crash or another made me lose my knack for it, what can I tell ya.  Lemme check... okay, according to my extensive records, the 2012 installment of the Hunger Games franchise was #1 for four weeks.  In between 2015 and 2016, the new Star Wars was #1 for five weeks.  Of course, when one of those weeks involves making $238 million or so, well... Which brings me, sort of, to the current incarnation of Halloween, which is only in its second week at #1.  Looks like ol' Jamie Lee will be able to write her own ticket now for this, let's say the tail end of the 2nd Act of her career.  Maybe a role in an Expendables reboot, but she won't have to do an About Schmidt-type indie vehicle, that's for sure.  A more typical fallen star has to do that kind of pic these days.
The only new film this week is the latest Gerard Butler juggernaut, which debuted at #5.  It's called Hunter Killer, and it seems to be a slight twist on The Hunt for Red October.  Just a slight twist.  A team of U.S. Navy Seals has to partner up with a submarine captain to rescue the Russian president, of all people.  Not Putin, that's for sure.  No one's going to mess with that guy, but he could probably get all kinds of American resources to help out if he ever did get kidnapped by someone.  Welcome to the new global reality.  I'm too exhausted to even comment on our current president, but I can't help but wonder... is this job fun anymore?  I mean, we've found out his real name is Drumpf, he cheated on his third wife with a porn star, he's used the National Enquirer to bury stories, he funnels money through law firms, he owes the government 500 million in back taxes, he won't condemn David Duke because he doesn't know who he is... did I leave anything out?  I guess he's like Leon Schlesinger, in a way, who once said he's not going to be kind to anyone on the way up because he ain't coming back down.
So, there's only one debut this week, but I'll give a brief shout out to the latest Jonah Hill project.  He's old school, and he still wants to play the silver screen game... even though he's got a Netflix (TM) (C) (R) project as well.  That thing with Emma Stone, right?  Anyway, he's got a thinly-veiled autobiographical project at #10, which seems to have debuted at #11 or lower last week, and it's called Mid90s... he didn't expect it to be a hit.  But I'll go ahead and suggest it anyway... Oscar sweep in five months?  Best screenplay, cinematography, what have you... Emmanuel Lubezki worked on this, right?

Auteur Watch - Kenneth H. Hawryliw

Gesundheit.

Bury My Vote At Wounded Knee

Ah, another awful news week.  You know, there used to be this old political tradition known as "The October Surprise."  There is, of course, a Wikipedia page entry for it... hmm!  Forgot about the 2008 one.  As you will notice, there are two that don't involve a Presidential election, from 2003 and 2006.  Our current president seems to be immune to such quaint traditions: most notably, that slow-moving Access Hollywood bus to destiny.  But on the eve of this, the most important election in our history, there are now two that stick out for me.  One, the horrible, Medieval killing of Jamal Khashoggi, and two, the scourge of voter suppression has finally spread to Native American voters.  You know, because they are the children of Geronimo Voters.  Apparently, Republicans are a bit nervous about all this, but they don't play it on TV.  But it would seem to me that they have two admittedly regrettable, but nevertheless distinguishable post-election realities.  One, they lose their slight margin of power in the House and Senate, or two, they keep all the power, thereby prompting more Soros-funded rallies in the streets.  Seeing as how they have no specific agenda, except overturning Roe v. Wade in particular, and "Everything is wrong unless a Republican does it" in general, maybe now would be a good time to take a vacation to get in touch with their outer Kochs.  The world may be getting more liberal as the 2030 Climate Change deadline approaches, but who are the really ruthless billionaires going to start backing as candidates?  A Democrat?  That'll be the day.  Inheritances are fun.
Speaking of which, there's that Mega Millions jackpot.  Wow!  Man oh man!  1.6 billion dollars?  Powerball seems a little bit less powerful now!  Maybe it's just me.  Of course, there's apparently a new tax on lottery winnings, so it adds up to about $450 actual take-home.  Not to mention all your aunts and uncles that seem to worm their way out of the woodwork, when a new source of monetary celebrity is within their six degrees.  Such an expensive world we live in.  Take, for example, the #1 movie this week: the latest iteration of that old Halloween story.  Director David Gordon Green continues his fight to stay away from the critical acclaim he received early in his career for films like George Washington and All the Real Girls.  He's an artist who's not afraid to make a little money, thank God!
Meanwhile, the other big picture this week... well, new film, anyway, is purported to be Robert Redford's last, and it's called The Old Man of the Mountain, starring Betty Boop, soon to be removed from YouTube... I mean, The Old Man and the Sea based on the Ernest Heming... I mean, The Old Man & the Gun.  I like the trailers for it because they use the font from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.  And if he is indeed 82 years old, as the Internet says, maybe that's a good time to retire... unless the movie's a big hit?  Oscar buzz?  Nope?  Okay, maybe it's time to retire, and just stick with The Sundance Channel and the National Resources Defense Council fulltime?  Does Redford have any contemporaries he's competing with anymore?  Besides Hal Holbrook and Christopher Plummer?
Oh, I would like to take this opportunity to pass on some notes to my implicit boss, Google.  I can't tell on my computer if the new cookies notifications work or not, and the library's not open today.  But I did notice a glitch with the map function.  See, for the uninitiated, when you have a blog, they provide you with a handy map to show where your various web traffic is coming from: Russia, Canada, Poland, the continental United States, what have you.  If a part of the world is particularly blocked with chock-a-block traffic, like when the Russian bots try and see where they can infiltrate, the country turns dark green... as you can now see from the attached pic.  By the way, is this you in this picture?  Anyway, there's some country called "Unknown Region" that turns the whole map very light green.  I don't know why that should happen, but it throws off the statistics by color.  Maybe it's the first one in the array or something.  Probably one of those glitches that aren't worth fixing; I mean, if not from the Unknown Region, where else is our sense of wonder supposed to come from these days?

Auteur Watch - Hillary Hawkins

If you take a look at Hillary Hawkins' IMDb Top 4, as of this writing, one of them is Dead Man Walking, on which she played an arguably minor role: ADR loop group, which I think has to do with fixing the sound before the movie gets released.  And since that time, she's evolved and advanced to being her own YouTube star, a sweetie-pie in general, and a director in her own right more specifically.  She has three directorial titles to her credit on her IMDb page, but no reviews of her films.  Here's my question.  Dead Man Walking is kind of a big film... DID SHE LEARN NOTHING FROM HER EXPERIENCE ON THAT ONE????!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bad Times at the Box Office

Man, I must not be having fun, because time has slowed down as though I've been in church all this time!  That's the price you pay: time slows down, but you gotta read the Bible, especially one with lots of "thee"s and "thine"s in it.  Makes it a little trickier, but what the hey.  We've got three debuts this week, but the moviegoing public decided, meh.  We'll just see the new Venom a second time instead.  Meanwhile, in astronaut news, current astronaut Scott Kelly goes where few men dare to tread: Twitter controversy.  Why, I'm so pre-offended by the whole thing that I'm not even going to dignify any of it with comment.  Bill Maher, whom many of my Facebook friends watch, probably dealt with it best, but I will just say that any variation of the phrase "I guess those days are over" is probably a recipe for Twitter disaster.  DO NOT TWEET anything like that.  If you're going to quote somebody, quote somebody, but no phrases that suggest a return to the good old days... oops, I think I've blogged too much.  But there were also some complaints online about how we, as a society, made the wrong choices over the years.  We chose to fund the space program instead of trying to fix the quality of inner city housing.  Sounds like something a Republican operative would try to pass off as a Democrat's quote, but I mean... this is America, not Canada!  Canada's got higher quality housing for poor people... learned that from one of Michael Moore's documentaries, I think it was the one about guns.  Which brings me to First Man, the latest good role for Ryan Gosling.  Seems like only yesterday he was "Young Hercules."  He'll get that Oscar (TM) (R) (C) someday, though.  Maybe not for this, but for... let's say The Notebook.  People love The Notebook, right?  ...oh, right, apparently First Man is about Neil Armstrong.  I've been listening to a lot of Robert Klein lately, and he's got a bit... I mean, some musings about Neil Armstrong, and... wow!  That's what I get for trying to search for Neil Armstrong and ANYONE ELSE!  Also, he made what I'm being told is a cryptic speech, so I now hate him forever and ever amen.  As for Robert, well, here's what seems to be his latest and greatest on YouTube.  Give 'em hell, Robert!!
Our second debut is R.L. Stine's latest stab at the movies.  Kind of a sad state of affairs when you have to go around telling people that you've sold over 100 million books.  Something has clearly gone wrong somewhere.  Anyway, so Austin Pendleton's new movie... I mean, R.L. Stine's new movie is called Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween and, well, it's clearly an attempt to teach children about all this meta-stuff going on in scripts these nowadays.  I mean, Halloween is traditionally supposed to be one day out of the year when we get to just merely act like stuff is haunted.  But what do you do when sinister forces try to take over Halloween and haunt it themselves, thereby ruining it for everyone else?  Too complicated.  Also, doesn't the plot sound a bit like the plot for... let's say, 1980's 1978's Magic?  Or is it just somewhere along that same plot spectrum, so to speak?
And finally, we got one of those Pulp Fiction-esque films, and it's called Bad Times at the Hotel California El Royale.  I feel sorry for Jeff Bridges now because every time he works on a movie, there's this expectation that he's going to do one of his picture books about it, and... I don't know, does he give it out to just some of the cast, or to the cast and crew?  The point being, there's this expectation now, and it might be getting a little bit costly.

Auteur Watch - Caran Hartsfield

Ah, these young, budding auteurs before they become big, bloated red giants... sorry, I was listening to the original "Cosmos" in the car.  I got the other one on hold at the library, don't worry!  Anyway, I'll try not to get sidetracked again.  Well, he or she, while not terribly prolific yet, certainly has a sense of catchy titles.  I mean, take a look at these four titles!  Kiss It Up To God... catchy.  King... catchy... if a little too simple.  Chutney Popcorn... oh, wait, it says "Actress," not director.  I guess Caran's a she, then.  Then there's "Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee."  Ooh!  That was a good one.  A prestigious HBO project, if memory serves, based on the Buffy Ste. Marie song of the same... oops.  I'm sorry, it's actually called Bury Me Standing.  None of these are available at Scarecrow, BTW.  But Chutney Popcorn probably is!  Lemme check...  yep!  It is!  That's one of those titles like A Fish in the Bathtub or Gas Food Lodging, titles forever associated with 1990s desert Lesbians.
But let's continue to proceed down this list... oh, wait, we're on the last one, and it's 10 Things I Hate About You, based on Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew" and... no, that's not it.  Oh, the movies that got greenlit in 1999, the year before the millennium.  It was indeed the big one, that change from 1999 to 2000.  A lot of people thought Jesus would come back and host "Saturday Night Live" the following Saturday.  Didn't happen, though, so the date was moved up a bit.  For the computer nerds, it's now 2048, because computer nerds like to do as little work as possible, and they collectively decided that 11 bits was enough to handle storage of year data.  I mean, it's like, 30 years away now!  We'll never get that far!  Anyway, Caran Hartsfield was on track to be the new Steven Soderbergh.  I mean, one major motion picture a year!  Not bad.  Life gets in the way for most others, but not for ol' sober Soderbergh.  No, the last film before the trail runs cold is called Things We Lost in the Fire.  Ugh.  These annoying ads are now popping up on the right hand side of my screen; let me see if I can get them to stop... okay, they've stopped for now.  Anyway, again, great title.  Margot at the Wedding, Castle Freak, Future Shock... the films are probably crap, but wow, wotta title.  Grabs you by the... imagination and doesn't let go, but again, that's not the title.  No, Caran's is called All Those Things I Never Told You... no, that's not it either.  No, it's that new TV series called "A Million Little Things," clearly riding on the way-too-big-for-its-own-good coattails of "This is Us" and... boy!  Having that trouble again.  I better take a short breather and try again at this thing later on.  What do you think, Caran?

I Don't Know How It Happened. It Was Faster Than Any Eye Could Flick. But All I Can Do Is Hand It To You..........

And there you have it.  The worst Supreme Court nominee in recent memory gets the job.  And I couldn't get hired at the Goodwill.  A bit of an upside-down world we're living in.  But I guess I should hand it to him, because when Mitch McConnell puts his 76-year old mind to something, he gets it done.  And hey, if you had the chance to tinker with the Supreme Court, well... wouldn't you, too?  They're no friend of mine, that's for sure!
As for me, myself, I'm stuck here on the Democrats' half of the political divide.  Forgive me.. the Demon Rat half of the political divide.  Don't want to be left out on the latest trend, you know!  Brought to you by words.  Words!  Change one letter and divide one word into two, and look at the fun you can have too!  It's Re-puke lickin' good!  But here's my suggestion for my fellow Democrats.  Going into this political future of ours, let's take a brief look at the past.  Specifically, the Dubya years.  Two memes of a sort emerged.  The first was "But what if a DEMOCRAT did it?"  You know, sat for twenty minutes after being told about the 9/11 attack, lying about yellowcake, what have you.  And the second, which more generally seemed to capture the vibes emanating out of the White House from that time, was the definition of insanity.  The dictionary definition, more specifically, which quite simply... and the dictionary does tend to be simple, which is one of its many charms... simply means doing the same thing and expecting a different outcome.  Which, depending on your outlook, could mean different things.  For instance, take the act of hitting a coconut with a hammer.  The far-thinking person thinks that eventually, if you hit the coconut long enough with a hammer, the coconut will open up.  The short-thinking person will hit the coconut with a hammer and think "Hey, nothing's happening!  Why do they want me to do this anyway?  It's pointless!"  For a Back to the Future Part II example, it's young Biff listening to the football game on the radio, and the score's not yet how older Biff predicted... bah.  They don't have it.  But you can track it down for yourself, one way or another.  Hey!  Got the compleat trilogy at me local library!
Anyway, so the insanity meme has fallen out of favour, but the "what if a Democrat did it" meme seems to have some staying power.  I also think we should start using the new Republican stand-by: "Well, I haven't read that report, but I do know this..."  Maybe not the "I do know this" part so much.  But here's my nominee going forward for a new meme: "How about if we're just ALL Republicans going forward?  How about that?"  As Howard Beale quipped about television in the original Network, not the new Aaron Sorkin tribute... people are thinking like "the tube" and dressing like "the tube," etc.  Well, now we're thinking, acting and dressing like computers.  And computers seem to have a strong way of dividing things into what is paid attention to and what is not.  And if something like the ... I don't even want to say it, but the child pornography ring in a pizza place... something like that can get traction.  Something like that can get a guy with a gun to suddenly find his purpose in life, and go down there like Rambo and run out of bubble gum, and other fanciful notions can gather so much momentum.  And people like myself can get on here and type things like "You know what I never liked?  Afternoons.  Let's get rid of afternoons forever!  Or pennies.  The most useless of coins.  Let's get rid of pennies forever."  Well, how about if we got rid of the Demon Rats forever?  What if we were all just God-fearing stuffy Republicans?  How would we divvy up the making of political decisions then?  Why, the free market, of course!  Let's see, one percent of the people will make all the decisions, and live in all the nice houses and... hey, they have it tough, too, you know!  I mean, marble floors and bare feet?  Nasty combination first thing in the morning.  And the heating bills... and suppose you slip on it?  One could fracture one's skull!  Again with the coconuts.  Well, it's a start, anyway.  And I know we're not supposed to shout people out of restaurants anymore, if only for Bill Maher's sake, but these days it's somewhat necessary.  I mean, if you don't like the Mexican people, don't eat their food!  But if I don't hear this question asked on one of the morning shows soon, I'm going to be very disappointed.
Speaking of shifting paradigms, the semi-marginal character of Venom in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 has finally gotten the treatment some Marvel fans thinks he deserves with 2018's Venom (I) starring the new Mad Max himself, Tom Hardy.  And... boy!  It's got a low IMDb number for such a new release!  How long has it been in development?  I mean, we're up to the nine millions for new releases these days!  We might hit ten soon!  The IMDb averages about 4,000 new entries a day.  Of course, they're spaced out evenly, so it's more like 2,000.  I'll give you an example... and I'll try to find a non-porn one.  Okay, this one might be clean: a new video game called 'Sea of Lies: Nemisis.'  Relatively recent, from 2014.  Well, the peons slaving away at the IMDb to update this almost-completely ad hoc work in progress database do what they can with the resources given.  Okay, here's the most recent I got as of this writing: an episode of something called "Wagas."  Seems like non-porn, right?  It says it's a comedy!  "Comedy, Drama, (non-porn) Romance."
Okay, so there's that.  Sidetracked again.  The only other debut this week is the new A Star Is Born.  I guess I'll try to be one of the first to say it... trying to be on the right side of history, for once... Oscar (TM) (C) (R) sweep?  A second Oscar (R) (TM) (C) for Eric Roth?  A first Oscar (TM) (R) (C) for pretty-boy Bradley Cooper?  Well, two, really... one for acting, one for directing.  Hasn't he suffered enough?  Toiled in the sulphur mines long enough?  Isn't it Sack Lodge's turn at the Big Dance?  Didn't he ask enough questions during his "Inside the Actors' Studio" days?  Also, does Dave Chappelle's street cred drop a little bit?  I mean... really?  The Bagger Vance role?  Didn't he used to make fun of that kind of thing before?  As for Lady Gaga, well... she's sung a couple times on the Oscars (R) (C) (TM) but we'll see if the Beverly Hills coterie think she's worthy yet or not.  I mean, does she gimp for the gold at all?  Does she have a wooden leg at the end of the pic, or is she in an oxygen tent or in a coma?  I think she's one of those two-faces that Seinfeld tried to warn us about.  Very different depending on what makeup she's using, but... that's just my own personal observation.  Don't let that enter your mind, Oscar-voting bloc.  You wanna get those young people interested in the Oscars again, right? (C) (R) (TM)  Lady Gaga's got 100 million reasons to get the award.  How about you?
