If nothing else, the life of B.S. Johnson shows that all was not well in the wake of the social revolution caused by The Beatles on T.V. And I haven't even made fun of the guy's name yet! We may never know what the B.S. stands for... at least, if we restrict ourselves to the IMDb only. According to Wikipedia, his full name is Bryan Stanley William Johnson. He did what he could to be hip and current, but apparently got really REALLY depressed when the fame and fortune he thought he was going to achieve just wasn't fame-y enough, nor was there enough fortune. But his greatest masterpiece would come about long after his death, something called Christie Malry's Own Double-Entry, and... oh, it's a bookkeeping thing, you pervs! Grow up, for God's sake. Then again... look at the film's IMDb Keyword List and you realize, hmm! Why, this film isn't about accounting at all! Sounds more like Peter Greenaway's house on a Tuesday night! Maybe part of the problem was that Mr. Johnson was trying to do too much. If you're Spielberg, you can do too much all you want... do I rely on him too much? Probably. What can I say? He's my crutch. I mean, a guy like George Lucas, any time he veers too far away from Star Wars the results are disastrous. I mean, Netflix (TM)(R)(C) doesn't even have that one! Gotta work on that. But B.S.'s choices of professions can seem at odds at times: according to the IMDb, he was an innovative writer, a poet, playwright, film and television director, and journalist. I mean, sure, he probably wasn't going to expose the corruption of all those other professions he was involved in. He was out to change the world, but not THAT much! Perhaps it was the reception of his 1971 TV movie, "On Reflection: B.S. Johnson on Dr. Samuel Johnson" that started him down the bad path. You know, you don't have to limit yourself to subjects with the same name as you! Two years later, and before he left this mortal coil altogether, he wrote, starred in, but didn't direct, a TV movie called "Fat Man on a Beach." Boy, young women in bars can be so cruel, can't they? Especially when they think you're slightly less than God's fig... gift. Man, my typing's starting to slip again! Okay, so David Attenborough he's not. He did seem to understand the need for the exclamation point in life in general, and in movie titles in particular. I mean, it was a whole subplot on a "Seinfeld" episode, for Chris... for God's sake! B.S. himself only directed two shorts with an exclamation point in the title, but wrote THREE with one. You know, the true auteurs always find the actor version of themselves who they want to put in every film, should their schedules have mutual free times. Bryan Forbes of course had to put Nanette Newman in everything, but who wouldn't want to? Am I right or what? Oh, totally out on a limb on that one. The point being that even a total schlub like B.S. Johnson found his on-screen avatar in the personage of one William Hoyland! If I'm reading his IMDb page correctly, B.S. more or less started William's career with his short film called You're Human Like the Rest of Them, a title that B.S. got from one of his English teachers in primary school, no doubt. The film itself is based on George Carlin's famous exercise and diet book called "Eat Right, Exercise and Die Anyway." When B.S. passed away, Holyand threw himself into his work and never looked back. A lot! I don't think I've seen him in anything... there's a lot of people in Gandhi, you know.
