Auteur Watch - K.C. Jordan

Our next auteur is named K.C. Jordan, and she's a Hollywood type. Her biggest role so far was in something called Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. Alas, there's just not enough room in Will Ferrell's shadow for everyone, and K.C. decided long ago never to walk in anyone's shadow, and... how's the rest of that go? All right... I keep seeing these IMDb ads for something called The Chosen, and I can't take it anymore. I'll bite... hmm! Who knew? Chaim Potok is hot again. Not Mordecai Richler Hot, but hot ne'theless. But K.C. did have to take a break from filmmaking after such a brush with greatness, and eight years later the film directing career began. Forgive me... the writing-directing career. Very important distinction, as any film student worth their weight in celluloid will tell you. But what subject to write about? For the average writer-director, they usually comb through their own lives for a suitable topic. Therefore, in order to be different, it's necessary to tackle the semi-taboo subject of past-lives. I mean, hey, it's not like we're Hearing Voices or something; we're not totally crazy. Now, The Shining... the Stanley Kubrick version, not the mini-series version that only Stephen King likes better... is at the top of the "past-lives" list, but... does that count, really? I mean, Buster Keaton sort of indirectly tackled the subject in his Three Ages. Then you've got this thing here, The Man from Beyond with Harry Houdini... it's all related, folks. Houdini gave Buster his nickname, or so the story goes. And once he was sufficiently famous, Houdini tried to divine the mysteries of "the next life," so to speak. He would expose the charlatans of his time who made their living as fortune tellers or who pretended to be psychics, uncovering the tricks of their trade. Made a few enemies, as you would imagine! For me, though, movies haven't covered this subject as well as TV documentaries. There was this one about hypnosis where a man was taken back to his life as a child, then taken to before that as the life of a soldier during World War I. Is it just the human imagination at work? Or are we actually ruled by the living spirits of people who lived before we did? Or could it be both? There was the case of a denizen of Hollywood named... Marty Martyn, something like that, and he seemed to possess the body of a young boy until he finally realized, oh, right! I'm actually dead! Supposedly the spirit of this Marty Martyn was obsessed with an old Hollywood beauty, but when he suddenly found out, while possessing the body of someone else, that she was either a) dead or worse yet, b) just not that pretty anymore, he finally gave up and left, and the boy was back to normal. As for any of the ancillary characters in the 1998 classic Fallen caught up in the killer's metaphysical game of "Tag, You're It," well... really, will any of us ever be normal again? After the 1987 classic, The Hidden, I know I'll never be the same... kinda doesn't hold up too well, though. I hate to admit. Well, you watch it now, and it's like "We get it! GET ON WITH IT already!!" It did spawn a really awful sequel, that's for sure! And really, isn't that the goal?... ooh! Found a link to that Marty Martyn story, so it turns out I didn't just imagine it. Also... man, everyone's dying on me here. I think he was in that TV documentary I mentioned earlier, a feller by the name of James Randi AKA "The Amazing Randi" who, much like Houdini, started out as a magician, but found that magic will only take you so far. In his case, he spent a lot of his time debunking the competition... I mean, exposing ... well, I'll let his IMDb Bio do the talking here. When using quotes within quotes, you have to make them single quotes instead of double... was that from Middle School? Man! How did I ever get through that? So the first one is about a person traumatized by past lives, the second is a person coping with the loss of a family member, and the third, well... I'd better just cut and paste it here: "A family struggles with the aftermath of a teenager's sexual assault." It's a topic that Hollywood tends to shy away from; they prefer to focus on the whimsical antics of superheroes... except this one, of course. You know... now that I think about it, I think there was a kids' show on PBS many, many moons ago, and there was a little girl who confronted the male adult who raped her. Am I crazy?
