Auteur Watch - Leslie Harris

Great.  Now I'm falling behind on my auteurs.  What little I do these days about auteurs, and I can't even keep up on that.  Well, I am getting older, and priorities are shifting, and I'm old enough to remember a brief moment in cinema history when it was becoming more inclusive to voices other than Spielberg or De Palma or Smith, and one title stuck out in particular, for some reason, and that was Once Upon a Time When We Were Just Another Black Girl on the I. R. T.  Did I mis-remember something else again?  Did they... wasn't the word "Black" in the long-ass title of that?  Or did the Lame Stream Media press just get it wrong again?  They tend to do that with movies sometimes.  They made the leap that most of us do... what, it's about a black girl?  And it's called Just Another Black Girl on the I.R.T.?  Oh, it's just Just Another Girl on the I.R.T.?  No Black?  No one will notice.  I mean, it's WWII France and the telegraph lines are down... it's like a whole 'nother world over there!  We might never make it home!  It goes to press as is.  That kind of deal.
And so, that's the alpha project for director Leslie Harris, and lead actress of it Ariyan Johnson could not be more grateful.  But that was a whole 'nother world ago and... hmm!  A black woman named Ariyan?  This changes everything.  And she's a director too!  Looks like the student is now the teacher!  But she does have her pride, and even in this age of more and more consolidation on the web, with celebrities just having a homepage on the Facebook out of laziness, she's kept her WWW domain.  And there's even a link on her IMDb "External Sites" page.  I didn't think anyone used those things anymore!
Anyway, back to Leslie Harris.  When we last left her, she was the toast of Sundance with her first film with the long-ass title.  The gates of Paramount were now open... well, really, all these studios have gates, but Paramount's are probably the most lavish.  Time for her sophomore slump, time for her to make her bloated Heaven's Gate vanity project.  And she did, apparently!  It was called Bessie Coleman's Dream to Fly, and... even though it's from 1993, we still don't have cast or crew information on it.  Um... what's the deal here, people?  Is this a real film or what?  Does no one care about Bessie Coleman or his or her dream to fly?  Is this one of those icky dreams where it's not about actual flying, just more of a pragmatic wish to not be raped by the evil stepfather anymore?  I can't find this at my local library, can't find it at my local greatest video store in the history of the universe... is this like Wang Dang or 12 Steps to Death?  Something that even Paul Allen is not willing to waste money on for a completion guarantee?  As Chris Rock once said, boy, this Leslie Harris must've really a-holed her way out of the biz on that one.  Clearly, the industry was not what she expected, and she never vowed to direct again.  And God bless her, she stuck by her vow, if only by societal fiat.  Kinda like how Sister Souljah has yet to enjoy a Second or Third Act to her once supernova-like career.  The nineties weren't all tofu and futons, just sayin'.  And of course, even though we're almost knee-deep in the '90s nostalgia hoopla, the Cocteau Twins are still too weird for my local radio station to play.  A damn shame.
But Leslie's not so disenchanted with her time in the Hollywood machine.  She's found a new career as... what else?  Herself!  An authority on directing.  Appearing in such titles as Directors on Directing and what not.  Don't forget to call Spike Lee a genius!  And a way-paver for us all... something like that.  Wonder if Spike ever wears jeans when he directs.

Meet The Feebles

Okay, that one was almost 30 years ago, so maybe it's time for a re-imagining.  Yes, because not everyone has access to "Crank Yankers," so The Happytime Murders was bourne.  There was a brief controversy about the movie a few weeks or months before its release date... it's probably archived on or by Yahoo! someplace.  Well, surely Brian Henson, son of Muppet maven Jim, is voicing his concerns as well, and certainly not getting involved with such a horrible project, right?  RIGHT?... oh, he directed it?  Ahem... (clearing throat)  Well, there you have it!  If it's good enough for him and Melissa McCarthy, well... it's darned well good enough for me.  Unfortunately for the American moviegoing public, it was only good enough for third place and just under $10 million domestic.  The studio will have to look to the good third-world countries where the moviegoing public there is forced out of the house and to the cinema at gunpoint.  Better ROI over there.  No, here in the good old USA, we'll stick with Crazy Rich Asians and The Meg, thank you very much.  If they do a sixth season of "Silicon Valley," it'll be the most expensive ever, gathering up enough grain to cover those increasingly expensive actors' salaries.
The only other debut this week is a reboot of the 1980s classic D.A.R.Y.L. ...that's the first thing that came to mind for me, anyway, being a person of a certain age.  ...Mary Beth Hurt and Mary Kay Place, I'm always confusing those two.  Which one's the makeup?  Anyway the movie's called AVP: Alien v. Preda... I'm sorry, it's actually a biopic about Axl Rose and it's called A-X-L for some reason.  Once again, I'll be the first to say it... should this not win one of those douchey new Oscars (TM) (R) (C) for "popular movies"?  Maybe screenwriting or special FX?  One of these new-fangled corporate people's going to have to pony up the money to take out a full-page "For Your Consideration" ad in Variety, listing all the possible categories the Oscar (TM) (R) (C) voting bloc could consider.  Best Catering, Best Nose Job, Most Effective Hollywood Diet Plan, what have you............

Auteur Watch - Brandon Harris

On to the next Brandon Harris.  I mean, sure, everyone wants to direct, but often times you've gotta learn one of the underling crafts that a director depends upon.  If you see the world in terms of winners and losers, well, you have to recognize that it takes a lot of losers to hoist up a winner.  Unless you're Trump, probably, in which case you just tie up everything in court for years and years.  In the case of the second Brandon Harris, however, it looks like the craft of gaffer would have to suffice before getting to sit in the director's chair...
...or would it?  I mean, check this out.  Brandon's first two directorial efforts: 2009.  Brandon's first gaffer job: 2010!  Hmm... gotta rethink the whole paradigm, maybe.  Now, if you're like me, you still have to look up certain words like 'gaffer' or 'emoluments clause.'  Maybe there's a few very, very good reasons I haven't gotten anywhere in this life.  And so, if you're like me, you see the word 'gaffer' in the credits, and you think, sure!  Those long-neck creatures from Africa they always have in the zoo... WRONG!  Wrong, wrong, wrong.  That's a giraffe, not a gaffer.  If you go to Wikipedia, you'll see that a gaffer is, like, the chief electrician on a movie set... incidentally, there's another million dollar fortune right there.  See, it used to be that when you double-click on a word... gotta go!  Dinner time.
(later) Ah, another fine dinner.  Anyway, when you're doing, say, a blog entry like this one, and you double-click on a word, the word gets highlighted PLUS the one space after it.  It still does, but it'll back up after a fraction of a second, and only highlight the word.  It's not quite enough to get you a guest shot on Colbert, but it's gotta be worth a couple million.
But back to being a gaffer, which is what Brandon Harris does during the day, in order to pay for his bad habit of directing at night.  See, when you build a house, call me home... sorry, that's the lyrics to Fleetwood Mac's "Sara."  But seriously, when you build a house, it inevitably comes with some electrical wires, especially if you live in the first world.  America used to be like that, but standards are slipping lately, along with everything else.  Electrical systems in homes are supposed to be built to last.  Hollywood, on the other hand, allows for more fluid electrical systems.  Say you have to travel to a far distant location like Vasquez Rock.  Why, you've got to bring your cables, lights and batteries with you!  And set 'em all up there!
That's the kind of crap Harris has to do, unless he's in the director's chair.  Of course, when you do short films like Harris, you're not sitting in the chair that long.  He had two shorts in 2009.  One is clearly about what he plans to do as a director, and it's called Portrait of a Monster... no, wait, it's about a hitman who grows weary of his job... something like that.  Yeah, I liked it the first time, when it was called Grosse Pointe Blank.  His second is called L'amor est... which could either be French or Italian for "Love is..."  What is this, the Choose Your Own Adventure series?  You're the filmmaker!  It's your job to tell us what love is, not the audience's job to tell you!  Find some spine.
So, directing didn't work out.  That is, until the right project came along.  Well, it didn't come along, but something called The Neon Demon... no, wait, that's Nicolas Winding Refn's 2016 project, and it's available on Amazon Prime.  No, this one's called Beneath the Neon, and it's clearly not as glamorous.  But you gotta give mad props to the gaffing work on this short film.  Alas, gaffers kept quitting on him, because Brandon kept finding gaffes in their work (drumroll... is this thing on?)  Now, the film itself isn't available on the YouTubes,... but a trailer is!  A trailer for a short film... the wonders of this world.  I guess it's the official trailer.  I'd do more research, but... oops!  On to my next posts.  No time for anything.

The Nisei Index

Welp, let's get to that Box Office report again.  We've got a couple... how about Scarlett Cleitt?... we've got a couple debuts this week, so let's just dive right in to that pool.  At #1, it's... well, we need a little bit of historical context here.  First, there was Eat Pray Love, then there was the first thing to make fun of it on the sliver... silver screen, called Crazy Stupid Love.  There probably needs to be periods after each word in that, but I don't care yet.  That's another stupid trend.  Anything to drive grade school English teachers crazy goes today.  I know I should be a fan, but I'm not.  The other thing is turning "crazy" into the new "very."  Crazy healthy, crazy fast... that kinda sh... oe leather.  And so we get Crazy Rich Asians.  The guy who stars in that, Jimmy O. Yang, went on "The Daily Show" to flog his wares... and hey!  It worked!  Number one domestic, albeit not by much.  Not since The Joy Luck Club has there been an all-Asian cast like this.  That's right, Jackie Chan, no love for you.  Yes, everybody who's anybody in the Asian film community was in this.  Not my Queen Li Gong, however.  Either she wasn't invited, or she's too big for the likes of this.  Nor Bai Ling, for that matter (my trainwreck).  I guess the Chinese don't count here.  That includes Ziyi Zhang, of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon fame, and others.  Rush Hour 2, for example.  Hey, they can't help it if their current president is a honey-eating douchebag!
The second debut this week is the latest collaboration between Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg.  Nuff said.  The last debut this week is something called Alpha, and... Albert Hughes?  JUST Albert?  But what about Allen?  What is he, chopped liver?  Oh, I don't care for this.  I just don't care for this at all.  These two gotta patch things up.  They gotta patch that sh... oe leather up right now.  Oh well.  Clearly, Albert is the alpha in this dyad.  Game changed for me.  Paradigm shifted, head kicked in.  World truly turned upside down now.  Gotta go.

Auteur Watch - Brandon Harris

...oh, there's actually two of them!  Well, let's start with this one.  They both have about the same length of résumé, so both probably got fed up with the biz when their project turned out to not have quite the length of legs they thought it had, resulting in their projects taking two steps, then falling over into the dust.
Well, the obvious alpha is called Redbelt which is about a martial-arts... I'm sorry, it's called Redlegs.  And as it turns out, this Brandon Harris fella is a little bit like Rod Lurie, in that he's a film critic-turned-film director.  And a couple big names turned up to review Redlegs... I mean, The Hollywood Reporter?  The New York Times?  You've probably heard of them.  As for the Village Voice, well... people have heard of them, but their film criticism section?  Poof!  Vanished!  No trace of it on the internet.  Where will hipsters turn to now for their bashing of Kirk Cameron?  The Onion?  Forget it!  They're gone too.
Ooh!  This will give me fresh nightmares.  It's a few steps removed from said Redlegs.  I followed this from one of the five co-writers of Redlegs' script: Nick D'Agostino.  I thought maybe that it was Fouch, but alas, no.  All right, I think I've given this enough air.

Baby There's a Shark At The Box Office

...damn.  Now that I think of it, the headline should probably read "Turteltaub Directs Shark Movie."  Oh well, we'll leave that for Variety... oh, please.  Projections "shredded"?  The Meg feasts on $97 million overseas?  Maybe I'm biased, but I prefer my headline.  People left the theatre entertained, but... slightly scratching their heads.  "Too turtle-y," they said.  But if he can get an Oscar-type performance out of Helen Mirren in National Treasure 2, by God, he's going to direct the sh... oe leather out of some shark movie.  I'm more of a Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus loyalist myself.  I mean, how do you top this?  Or this for the Best Actress Oscar voting block?  Oh, it's got everything.  But I do feel some hope for Jason Statham fans.  If they're at all like me, they suffer from Statham Amnesia Syndrome (TM).  That's when you watch a Jason Statham movie, but still can't remember crucial plot points a few days afterwards.  I mean, I remember the one with what's her name... Anne Heche and Hope Davis, that's it... I mean, I hate the bad guys as much as any action movie fan, but Good Lord!  They get filleted by Statham quite a bit here.  I think this one was trying to be The Day of the Jackal, and I think this one was trying to be that one sketch when Steven Seagal hosted SNL that one single time.  The sketch was where he was trying not to fight for five minutes.  He kicked everyone's ass in the last ten seconds or so of the sketch, but... you get the idea.  And, of course, I would be remiss at best, and downright derelict in my duty at worst if I didn't point out the outright genius of putting Jason Statham and a giant shark in a movie together.  I mean, one's a ruthless, dead-eyed sharp-toothed killer that can smell blood a mile away in the ocean... and the other is a giant shark.  Drumroll please!
Our second debut this week is called... how about Matt Amott?  Anyway, our second debut this week is called Slender Man.  I know why this was such a big hit.  It's because of the immense popularity of his theme song.  I believe it goes "Slender Man, where are you coming from, Slender Man... Nobody knows who you are!"  Love that tune.  Didn't see any ads for this one, though.  Arguably, I might've searched past them on my TeeVough.
Our third and final debut this week is Spike Lee's latest joint, Black Klansman... sorry, that's BlacKkKlansman.  One word.  It's about a black... sorry, African-American police officer who manages to infiltrate a local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan.  Yeah, I liked it the first time when it was called Rachel Dolezal... I mean, Shock Corridor.  Or that "White Power" sketch on Dave Chappelle's show.  I know, I know... I'm being too hard on poor ol' Spike again.  Well, with only $10 million in the bank domestic, I'm not the only one.  But you know what?  Maybe it's too soon to ask, but... Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar (TM) (R) (C) for Spike?  I would've said Director, but I think the DGA probably hates Spike.

Auteur Watch - Mahamat-Saleh Haroun

...is Chad a French colony?  I can't help but look at this guy's résumé.  He seems to enjoy his work, but there's at least one theme here, as far as titles can illustrate themes.  You got your Letter from New York, you got Bye Bye Africa, and there's A Season in France.  ...I think this guy got into directing for the travel!

Def By Reputation

There is much continuing happiness in the Mapother household this week, as the latest installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise is #1 for the second week in a row.  Which might help out when contract renegotiations happens, but personally I think Tom Cruise will have to repent for the poor performance of that Mummy movie he did.  But... but the mummy had two eyes!  We know, we know; still didn't help.  As for the debuts, well... Disney got out the vote for their latest prestige project called Christopher Robin.  Which might help come Oscar(TM) (R) (C) time, but I don't think it's animated enough to qualify for the Best Animated Feature Oscar, despite the work they did on the CGI Ewan McGregor... oh, wait, that was actually him?  Anyway, from reading the plot description of Christopher Robin... at first, I thought it would be the backstory of A. A. Milne and the childhood friends he ended up basing Winnie, Eeyore et alia on.  Some authors are luckier than others when it comes to those family slash childhood friends, because some make more memorable books than others.  Perhaps that's where the skill of the individual author comes into play.  But in this instant case, it's more of the plot arc of 1991's Hook, where a grown man gets so lost in climbing the corporate ladder, they forget that they're Peter Pan in real life, or alternate life, wherever.  Me myself, I say why climb the corporate ladder when you can fly?  Again, that's just me.
The only other debut... oops, there's three this week.  The second debut is from the new supergroup of Hollywood friends.  I never did finish that thesis about the three S's... there's the Soderbergh supergroup of Hollywood friends, the Ben Stiller supergroup, and the Adam Sandler supergroup-type association of which Rob Schneider, depending on his mood that day, either wants to or not wants to be a part of.  I mean, he's got that successful reality show now!  Why would he need to rely on anyone else at this point?  But there's always threats just off-stage, and new alliances get formed.  Vince Vaughn tried to escape the gravity of the Stiller supergroup to form his own... whatever this was.  And now the new lady Ghostbusters have their own supergroup, and given the current Twitter-fueled climate, I must do everything I can to acknowledge their might and power, of which Hollywood took notice longer ago than even I.  But if I can engage in a little act of rampant meta-criticism... because I did see a headline that read "Why Can't Hollywood Give Kate Mackinnon Any Decent Roles?"  If memory serves, Denzel Washington asked the same thing of a 60 Minutes reporter.  And I often wonder why Melissa McCarthy does the movies she does.  They don't seem to be particularly great, but I think she knows what she's doing.  For another example, Joe Pesci did quite a few movies in between the classics that no one ever mentions.  Take The Super, for probably the best example of that.  Probably a decent star's paycheck for Pesci, but even the director doesn't like to reminisce that much.  But at least now I know what that picture of Mackinnon and Mila Kunis squatting on the floor was all about.  It's out now!  And it's doing great!  And clearly it's time to give "Joni & Susanna" a second look... in my case, a first look.
The final debut this week... oh, damn.  I forgot to ask last week.  Well, guess it's time to ask... how about Brett Pieratt?  Anyway, the final debut this week is called The Darkest Minds, a delightful sci-fi romp that seems to combine the old plots in just the right way for our dreary modern times.  See, there's this old movie which beget a TV series of the same name called Logan's Run.  And as you can see from the plot description of that, it's like Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World" with the limitation that life ends when you turn 30.  And if you watch MTV at all these days, well... clearly that's their credo.  Except for the host of "Ridiculousness" who's about to celebrate his 50th birthday!  Good for him.  He must have some really great motel pictures of some Viacom bigwig.  (#MotelPicturesMatter)  Well, in the Herbrand universe of The Darkest Minds, the line is at 18 years old.  People are allowed to cross the line, but everyone past the line of 18 is apparently in AARP, and they've got their thumbs on the youth of their today as hard as possible.  I can see a car floating in the poster, so... they're like the X-Men kids of Logan fame?  Just remember... whatever you do, do not piss off that one with nitrogen breath.  Otherwise, goodbye arm!
