Auteur Watch - Gregory Hines

One of ... I wouldn't say childhood heroes, but he was in there, definitely.  He was just a luminous star, trying to do his thing.  Tried out directing a bit, but I guess it didn't take.  Seems like he could've directed Tap, a movie about ... oh.  Just read the plot description.  Yeesh.  It says "Just released from prison, Max Bialystock... I mean, Denzel Washington... I mean, Max Worthington must decide which of his previous professions to return to: burglar, or tap dancer."  Lemme guess... burglar for a while first, til all his friends get caught after the big, one last job, then back to tap dancer.  Right?  I should probably add that his episode of "Amazing Stories" called "The Amazing Falsworth" is a fond childhood memory, if only because I was probably too young to watch it, and because it took that very violent turn late in the Third Act.  Then, Hyams and Hines did Running Scared (1986) together.  I guess one only wants to work with Hyams twice, and that's it... but as of 2013, Jean-Claude Van Damme seems to be the lone exception!!

Dealing With Difficult People

Brought to you by Torrid.  Torrid!  Because fat chicks want to be slutty too.  Whelp, let's get right into it.  Taking advantage of the slow new year once again, which worked in 2016 for Split, the M. Night Shyamalan Night Train Back to Glory roars, nay, RAGES on as Glass hits #1 for the second week in a row.  All well and good, but if I were Bruce Willis, I wouldn't take more points on my next project just yet.  Meanwhile, James McAvoy hosted Saturday Night Live last night... didn't mention the movie in his monologue!  Took the time instead to promote Scotland, his place of birth.  Now that's confidence... has he hosted before?  Hey, I just thought of a terrific idea for a monologue joke, if someone else would care to do the statistics for it.  How about the One Timers Club?  Has McAvoy hosted before?  Anyway, the next host that's done it only for their first time, you get invited to the One Timers Club.  Why look!  They're all here!  George Clooney, John Turturro... who else?  Jon Lovitz could be the butler, and make a joke about having to kick Jim Belushi and Kevin Farley out all the time... that's yours for free, you Ivy Leaguers.
As for the debuts... there's a new one called The Man Kid Who Would Be King.  It's written and directed by Joe Wright's friend named... gotta look it up again... Joe Cornish.  Well, he's a sweetheart.  Someone the film nerds can really get behind.  Of course, the film nerds are all growed up now with a family, raising little film nerds of their own.  They took their kids to this nice PG-rated fare and pointed out all the little in jokes and shots with some of the crew accidentally in the frame... sorry, "accidentally" in the frame.  Well, pixel washing's expensive, dude!  And in this era of Kingsmen and Deadpool, sometimes you want that PG-rated family fare, what can I tell ya.
Ooh!  Looks like Green Book is enjoying a post-Oscar (TM) (C) (R) resurgence, hooray.  No producing credit for Effie Brown?  Duly noted.  Boo.  The only other debut to speak of this week is called Serenity... and no, it's not a 4k 1080p restoration of that ... that... what's his name?  My memory for names is clearly off this day.  Joss Whedon, that's it.  No, it's not a re-release of the 2005 classic of the same name, beautifully, tastefully restored in Real 3D, Dolby 5.1, 4p, 1080K what have you... rather, it's a modern re-envisioning of Cape Fear by way of A Perfect Getaway, starring Matthew McConaughey and still-out-of-rehab Anne Hathaway.  I guess Jennifer Garner was busy or something.  And speaking of Matthew McConaughey... did I see that right?  One of his car commercials where he plays the introspective wallflower at the Vanity Fair Post-Oscar (C) (R) (TM) party?  Say it isn't so, Matt McC!  You're not the wallflower!  You're the alpha male of Ghosts of Girlfriends Past!  Of Dazed and Confused and... probably others.  Same thing happened to Tim Allen in Christmas With the Kranks.  Of course, maybe he was just trying to get out of the movie while he was still in it.  That happens quite a lot.  Take Richard Pryor and Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life is Calling.  Dude tried to burn himself out of it!  ...something like that.  Guess I better quit while I'm ahead.

Auteur Watch - Lawrence-Hilton Jacobs

Now that is a name fraught with integrity and social bearing... can't think of words at midnight right now.  Regality?  You get what I'm trying to say.  He is of course best known for the L. A. Heat quartet.  I know this because his IMDb Top 4 says this.  In fact, according to his IMDb Top 4 as of this writing, it seems to favor the 70s and 80s quite a bit.  What, did the man's life end after "The Jacksons: An American Dream" or something?  I'm scanning the whole page to see a title I recognize... some, but one that I've actually seen.  Well, I did see parts of Death Wish, but I don't remember him as "Mugger in Park #2"... shouldn't that be "Mugger #2 in Park"?  Now that I had some time to think about it... not necessarily.  After all, I think there were several parks in Death Wish, certainly several muggings.  Never get caught on that staircase, that's one big lesson for big city living.  How about "Mugger #2 in Park #2"?

Wake Me Up When September Ends

Hah!  The rumours of my demise were just that.  Mere roum... rumors and gossip.  But let's jump right into it.  Thank GOD!  There is much happiness in Shyamalan-ville tonight, even though he won't want to admit it.  I saw that CBS Sunday Morning show!  I saw the flop sweat.  They could've been really, really cruel and called him a one-hit wonder... at least, until Split, that is.  No more.  Back on the map.  And now we have Glass.  See?  Some things are worth waiting three years for!  And so, the 19-year trilogy is complete.  Of course, it cost $50 mill in adverts just to get to that $40 million, domestic.  But M. Night is not one given to long periods of rest, because he's already hard at work on his next labour of love, which is called... oh.  Labor of Love.  I don't have IMDb Pro, so I don't know if the title is subject to change at all.  I dunno... sounds a bit like About Schmidt to me.
Meanwhile, back at the box office... an installment of the neverending Dragonball series is out in the theatres this week.  Well, fellow hardcore members of that college Anime club, it took 20 years, but we did it!  It was a slow week and this thing comes in at #3!  Boy, some of these demographic shifts are even starting to freak me out a little bit.  I kinda feel for the red states a little bit!  Of course, there's the government shutdown that's still happening.  If there aren't massive riots in the street by the time of the second paycheck missed... the 25th, right?  Boy!  I'm kinda relieved I don't work for the state right now!  Guess they were sparing me some heartbreak.  Personally, I think Drumpf is so freaked out by the Democrats in the House that he wants to keep the government shut down for two years.  You know, it's like what happened to Neo asking for his phone call, and Agent Smith saying "Tell me, how can you make a phone call if you are unable to speak?"

Auteur Watch - Jamal Hill

Still foundering, writer-director and all around Renaissance-type man Jamal Hill is enjoying a little bit of success in Hollywood.  The most exciting time of his life was clearly in 2007 and 2008, when he rubbed elbows with Will Smith and the Marvel (TM) (C) (R) universe.  Of course, Marvel (C) (TM) (R) wasn't quite as corporate back then, but still pretty darn corporate!  Yes, Hill's days of climbing the mountain, getting coffee for tempestuous movie stars and union heads, are long gone, a mere speck in the rear view mirror now.  But it gets lonely at the top!  I mean, put yourself in his place.  You're invited to the big DreamWorks Oscar (TM) (R) (C) party.  How do you introduce yourself?  Do you say you just finished directing "Coins for Christmas"?  Or do you tell people you did sh... stuff on Iron Man 1?  Discuss...

Opportunity Crisis

Despite the protestations of the various new social movements, Kevin Hart's latest film debuts at #1, domestic.  It's called The Upside of Anger... sorry, that's a 2005 Kevin Costner vehicle.  No, this one's called Upside Down... sorry, that's a 2012 movie starring Kirsten Dunst.  If you check out her IMDb Top 4, it includes 2002's Spider-Man, 1994's Interview With the Vampire, and of course her stint at the Cirque Lodge Treatment Center in Utah, saying that she sought help for depression, not for drug or alcohol abuse... sorry, I cut and pasted that from her IMDb bio page.  Is the egg showing or what?
...where was I?  Oh, right.  The #1 movie this week, domestic, is called Upside Down... sorry, that's a 2012 film directed by Ajay Singh.  The ACTUAL #1 movie is called Up the Down Staircase... sorry, that's the 1967 version of Dangerous Minds.  They all are grandchildren of The Blackboard Jungle, which is itself a ripoff of a classroom scene from the Laurel and Hardy 1931 feature-length two reel short, Pardon Us... featuring a young Kevin Bacon.  What is WITH me today?
(two hours later) Okay, after looking at the actual IMDb page a second time, it's called The Upside... hmm!  That title seems a little anti-climactic now, considering the personal journey I've just been on.  Whatever.  It's based on a French film, which at first glance you'd think might not play in the American market, but don't forget!  Nous sommes Charlie Hebdo, n'est ce pas?  So eat your hearts out, Luc Besson and Francis Veber, because this Éric Toledano is gunnin' for you!  Metaphorically, that is.  I also forgot to mention that "Breaking Bad" and "Malcolm in the Middle" star Bryan Cranston is rather blatantly gimping for Oscar (TM) (R) (C) gold, but who knows?  If he wins the Golden Globe (TM) (C) (R) (GmbH) for this, the Oscar (C) (R) (TM) is clearly not terribly far behind.  But really, the Oscar (C) (TM) (R) will be for "Breaking Bad," we all can see that.  Sadly, the "Oscar Gap" ... sorry, "Oscar (TM) (C) (R) Gap" phenomenon isn't readily available when you search for it with Lycos (TM) (R) (C).
But enough of this gay banter.  Our second debut this week is the biggest thing since Marley and Me.  It's the second of the W. Bruce Cameron dog trilogy and this installment is called Dog Caspian ...sorry, I'm getting my six-parters mixed up again.  No, it's called A Dog's Way Home.  And seeing as how it's debuted at #3, we'll get the rest of the installments soon enough.  Oddly enough, Amblin doesn't have a piece of this one!  I'm of course referring to A Dog's Purpose.  Yes, a toast to W. Bruce Cameron, the Nicholas Sparks of dog stories.  Let's move quickly on before the buzz wears off.
...no more debuts this week!  But I would like to give a brief shout-out to On the Basis of Sex, which I don't think I've seen yet.  I think it's making its debut in the top 10, even though it's been out for three weeks already.  Now judging from the title alone, you'd probably think this is some sort of 80s sex comedy along the lines of The Wild Life and Private Resort, but you'll be quickly disappointed, I'm afraid.  No, it's about the young Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and in the new tradition of biopics, they get a babe to portray her: Felicity Jones.  For some reason I was thinking of Rashida Jones, who would've been just as good, even though she's not British.  More symptoms of the current biopic market.  Meanwhile, in Lady Gaga news, according to my email she issued a formal apology for working with R. Kelly.  Oh, NOW she apologizes!  I guess because that new docuseries came out about him and all that.  Well, who knows how these new social movements work.  Cosby's finally in prison, Harvey Weinstein's not in jail but has been all but cast out of society, but somehow R. Kelly's managed to avoid all that.  Ted Nugent too.  Why is that?  Oh well.  Even Congress has its trends.  You hear that once in a while, a Congress man or woman will say that an issue won't play during this session.  Same thing with child molesters, I suppose.

Auteur Watch - Mark Hicks

Oh good!  Another easy one... or is it?  Better be careful who you insult in Hollywood.  I mean, even George Costanza is a black belt in something, right?  He doesn't like to have it on his IMDb bio, but he did talk about it on Letterman one time; never did make a "Seinfeld" episode about it.
(Monday, 1/14) - nope.  Well, let's just blurt out a little bit then.  Clearly, Mark hasn't taken to directing yet.  Just the one so far.  And judging from the IMDb plot description on the main page here, I'm guessing they're not fast-tracking his DGA membership.  I mean, read it for yourself here!  It says this "Afro Ninja" is based on a hugely successful YouTube video.  Of course, this was back in 2009, during YouTube's infancy; if they were doing it today, sure.  Instant DGA membership today right along with PewDeePie and ... whoever else is a big star on YouTube these days.  Angry Video Game Nerd, too.  I guess he's in no big hurry to hang out with anyone else besides Lloyd Kaufman.

Bloggy McBlogface

The first one of the new year!  Whelp, there must be some holiday I'm unaware of, because none of the IMDb staff have bothered to update the weekend box office totals... (Tuesday) okay, they're up now.  By the way, this blog post is brought to you by our sponsor: Bill O'Reilly's new book called "Bill O'Reilly's Bill Of Rights: A Cultural Warrior Lightly Treading the Exciting New Waters In and Of the #MeToo and #TimesUp Movement."  Neil Cavuto raves: "What a read!  I've already personally bought a few thousand copies of the thing, and I can't put it down!  What a page turner!"  Laura Ingraham says "It's been long enough, snowflakes!  Time to bring this cultural hero and icon of note back into the fold!  ...maybe after my time slot, though.  I'm not moving."  The only debut this week is a PG-13 rated version of Saw called Escape Room.  Now you're probably thinking that Aquaman director and creator of the Saw series James Wan would protest, but really, turnabout's fair play, as people other than me used to say when they were young.  After all, he did direct a reworking of Death Wish in 2007 called Death Sentence.
